RMIT and UQ are now among a growing number of Australian universities facing the issue of underpaying academic staff.

Elysse Fenton, a former UQ course coordinator, said universities "are run on exploited labour".

The unpaid hours were racked up due to "impossible" marking rates for essays and time spent assisting students. She estimated that commitment meant she was owed $28,000 in unpaid wages from UQ, which is about half of her total earnings during the 18-month period. Melbourne's RMIT is expected to be taken to the Fair Work Commission today after missing its own deadline to respond to underpayment allegations. The university's School of Management reduced the number of hours tutors could claim for marking and the union estimated some staff could have had their pay reduced by $6,000 a semester.

At Murdoch University in Western Australia, students in one course have been told parts of some work will no longer be marked.

How important is High-QualityFeedback on assignment work? Priceless. AcademicChatter

Ohh dear. Talking about dumbing down! This is ludicrous. Our health system is crumbling, we have more homelessness and now our education standards are approaching third world status. We have car number plates with 'smart state' on them?

What a shame. I am shocked to know uni exploits the nice people who have taught me valuable knowledge and mentored me through my research. They are so helpful and do make a very positive impact on my life and my development. They deserve job security, especially unis are making $

Leaving Tertiary education as a teacher/lecturer was a decision easily made when admin staff were photocopying course work of good students to put in the dossiers of failing students as you only get funding for passing students .I believe they call that systemic corruption.

I believe the number of group assignments is based on reducing the number of student works to be read. Group assignments suck even more during remote learning . Hard to get consensus and equal effort. Annoying to be graded on substandard group work.

Unpaid? Aren't they Marxists? They should be doing it for free.

I was told 15 minutes was adequate for marking a coursework master's thesis.

University’s left in the lurch as government cuts more funding. Government does not prioritise an educated society and condemns Australia’s future.

This was my lecturer and tutor last semester! Keep up the good work, UQ are crooks

I drew the line at being told to refer to lecture Powerpoints as a means to interpret illegible writing by NESB business students in exam papers.😡

The headline is hearsay. Has it been fact checked? How about using her first hand knowledge? Or are you supporting the skim read policy? ABCmediawatch

Staff numbers Cut. Home studying, And now their asking tutors to skim What’s next. No checking for plagiarism. No exams.

Can you imagine going to a restaurant where they just scape the plates clean to cut back on paying staff to actually wash up?

Slow news day

Skim reading isn't doing a poor job. Do they realize they are expecting lawyers, the kings of speed reading, to side with them on that...
