Schools can appeal A-level and GCSE grades for free, says Gavin Williamson

Schools in England will be able to appeal against A-level and GCSE grades free of charge, in a climbdown by the education secretary, Gavin Williamson. He said it would be a “shocking injustice” if cost stopped appeals being made on behalf of pupils with a “strong and legitimate” case.

It's the same old story as with everything you lot do you all ways fail you really don't have an idea maybe if Boris got off his ass and worked like he should things might be better but the only answer is for you lot to go now and let LABOUR IN

Resign GavinWilliamson BorisJohnson send him P45!

If universities are refusing to hold places open what's the point? Students who successfully appeal their grades should be guaranteed their place for this year & not deferred to next year.

Big. Fuckin. Deal

They shouldn't have to appeal GavinWilliamson you fcked up you should correct it

And he'll throw in a tin of grate blacking as a goodwill gesture.

Williamson is charging the cost of HIS ineptitude onto the British taxpayer! Unacceptable!!!!

It's free anyway if you're successful

So most state schools will apply.

If only teachers had carried on teaching their students and preparing them for an autumn exam eh? Yes, the government have been shit but too many teachers and schools. They should've empowered students by giving them the knowledge they would need ace the exam in autumn term.

Yeah at a £150 a pop per subject, one can imagine that this preplanned money raiser to keep the poor out of university and put some coffers in the bank is a sure fire way to keep up with tory corruption removethetorygovernment

I don't whether these are Williamson's words or the Guardian's, but I'd give D for the English. Let's all please sharpen up our expression in these troubled times!

Or just do what Scotland did and go back to Teacher's predicted grade.

5 in 6 teacher predicated grades are wrong

Great.... How? Rules currently state students have to sit an exam. How do they do that, they have in most cases left that establishment. And you want the exams done in Oct, so that 8 weeks prep time rather than 4 months for creative subjects. Bravo.. Now go quit.

How much will that all cost? ££millions. Lets throw our money away and bring back workhouses.

So the people who created the appalling injustice care about injustice? As each day passes this Johnsonian government reminds me more and more of the double-thinking totalitarian dictatorship portrayed in Orwell's 1984..

Wonderful gesture from a rising star in English politics

How about treating teachers like the trained, experienced professionals they are? Every. Single. One. of them has more teaching experience than you do.

A clear admission that the system failed then.

GavinWilliamson First he screws up & then flushes down taxpayers’ money by offering freebies. Both him & conman Boris should be forced to sponsor the appeals from their personal millions that they have amassed through dubious means. T May was so god damn right in sacking him

They shouldn’t have to appeal GavinWilliamson should of just got it right in the first place. I hope that every college in greatermanchester appeal on behalf of every student in every subject Alevelshambles

This government thinks several steps ahead.

I sure his soul (if he has one) would be much happier doing Frank Spencer impersonations .

Whoop de do

The taxpayer will cover the cost of my own incompetence

So what? Places have already gone due to your screw up. You have insulted teachers and ruined young people’s futures. They should not have to appeal at our cost, they should have been given the grades they earned. Resign GavinWilliamson and do it now.

Resign! The whole thing has to be dropped and the kids get their predicted grades.

Your fault! You sort it out! not the schools or the kids! GavinWilliamson

This is meaningless. The appeal system is so restrictive that only matters of fact can be appealed, not “opinion”. The system is set up for marked papers, not an algorithm.

Gavin is so appealing!🤓

They shouldn't have to appeal as the process is flawed.

Empty gesture, too late for their rightful University place. How incompetent does this cabinet have to be to resign? Clearly this shower think that their pale and frail fogey voters will keep them in power because they lost the youth vote.

The appeals are gaslighting giving the veneer of a chance to change grades but in reality the criteria are so narrow they are virtually useless. Not to mention the timescales make them pointless for uni application & it will be worse for GCSEs & will impact teacher time in school

Except it’s not free is it! Like the eat out scams it’s us the taxpayer paying for it. People are so blind & naive to see what’s really going on ToryShambles

Appeals are not the answer. Teacher's wouldn't have given the prediction without underlying evidence, so on that basis every appeal should be successful! That isn't going to happen, additionally what about maintaining year on year comparisons?

This is such a load of shit. The marking needs to happen all over again. And if it doesn’t then people should riot over this because the political classes have never made such an overt act to suppress the us poor working class folk, in modern times!

This is simply an outrageous handling of this situation. This will impact on people for the rest of their lives.

Will this affect me getting my eyes tested in a castle ?

That’s absolutely no consolation to the students affected by the incompetent grading fiasco.

GavinWilliamson you only need to resign!

Revert to teacher grade predictions. This will be a mess otherwise and one that drags on and on.

Another way of saying “We are scrapping our original nonsensical idea of making people pay to appeal their grades which are based on our flawed algorithm”

My understanding from reading is that the schools cannot appeal the algorithm where they get downgraded because of previous results but can only “reorder” their students ie if the maximum their students have previously got at the school is an A no one is getting an A*. 😡

er, but the appeal process itself is massively flawed so it is another empty gesture.

Big F'ing whoop GavinWilliamson It's the very least you can do for putting thousands of alevels2020 students through your prejudiced algorithm and causing them untold mental stress at what should have been a time of celebration!

Stop wasting taxpayer money and just scrap this farce GavinWilliamson Stop being arrogant and digging in your heals to try to save yourself, rather than admitting you've got it wrong. These youngsters don't deserve their lives being ruined by your incompetence.

A system that requires an appeal to make it fair, is not a fair system AlevelResults examshambles

Abandon the biased and unfair algorithm for the GCSE students now or the cost of appeals will be overwhelming. Why did it get to this stage? Surely OFQUAL could have modelled/checked out the awful impact on the most disadvantaged students and schools? They had weeks to do it.

Instead of pushing responsibility for resolving YOUR f*ck up onto thousands of schools and 10's of thousands of pupils, how about your ONE department pull your collective fingers out of your collective arses, follow Scotland's example, take responsibility and put it right.

Save the money, give pupils the grades their teachers predicted allowing everyone to move on. The fact that 2 renowned statisticians refused to help because of a 5 year NDA they’d be forced to sign says everything about the algorithm used gradethepupilnotthepostcode

Imagine having to pay to appeal for someone else's cock up...

Everything these incompetents touch turns to crap.

Woopee, they didn't sit an exam, they had no choice - predicted grades please!!!

NOT GOOD ENOUGH

I'm America we make sure all our students have Covid-19. I'm not trying to brag but .....

Throttlebottom:

If I was student I'd go abroad, good way of getting out of this shit hole. Cheaper as well.

You haven’t got a clue GavinWilliamson it goes deeper than that

Do the conservative know what they are doing?

Save money, give the kids the CAG with an asterisk, let them get on with their lives, if the grades don’t match their performance in an interview, they don’t get the job, the world keeps turning. It’s really not difficult. Oh, Williamson should resign too.

big deal. will take far too long just scrap the whole algorithm nonsense

You've caused these students so much misery. You can resign, Wiliamson...for free.

It's nowhere near enough. Ofqual needs to abandon the flawed algorithm and Williamson has to go

Save yourselves the money by awarding predicted grades and give these funds to this years 10 and 12 who are sitting exams next year to help them catch up priorities AlevelUTurn

removethetorygovernment

Will he resign for complete incompetence as well?
