The plan is likely to include €75m for building works to help ensuring physical distancing in classrooms, millions of Personal Protective Equipment and hand hygiene equipment for schools and guidance on what to do if a Covid-19 case occurs.
Speaking on RTE's The Week In Politics yesterday, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said while this is "a very good plan", the reality is "this is a virus that's in the community". INTO General Secretary John Boyle said there will be a lot of pressure on boards of management and principals to deliver the return to school plans and it is a very big ask.
Teachers Union of Ireland General Secretary John MacGabhann said unions will be guided by the public health advice in respect of reopening schools and while it would be preferable if teachers did not have to use PPE, it must be respected if people prefer to use it. One secondary school principal said he is positive about the return to school, but warned there are not enough teachers available particularly in the language sector.
