NPR spoke with superintendents across the country about this fall. They say they're determined to open school safely — and feel dismayed by the Trump administration's efforts to politicize and rush decisions that could have life-or-death consequences.

Ann Levett's worst day as superintendent of Savannah-Chatham County Public School System wasn't March 26, the day Georgia's governor first closed schools, keeping Levett's more than 37,000 students home in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Levett had hoped to welcome students back on Aug. 5, right on schedule, but says she can't do that safely while COVID-19 continues to spread in Georgia — and many nearby states. Every day, Levett wakes up and checks the numbers."And I'm like, 'Please, please let them go down. Please let them go down. And they're not going down.'"

School leaders say they are determined to open school safely, and feel dismayed by the Trump administration's efforts to politicize and rush decisions that could have life-or-death consequences in their communities. While superintendents may not share President Trump's view of the science of reopening, they do share his sense of urgency.

Why can I go to the dentist, but kids can’t go to school?

My district, despite the rising cases, is seemingly gung-ho about reopening. Granted, we're implementing a hybrid system that'll split the student population. However, I fully expect outbreaks because masks aren't mandatory, just 'encouraged.' It'll be a fiasco.

The virus is like a wildfire. We KNOW IT WILL SPREAD if nothing is done. Putting out hot spots here and there won’t contain it. It is easier to bombard a small wildfire with everything you have rather than waiting for it to engulf hundreds of miles THEN start trying to contain it

It's not a Federal issue.

Shut the fuck up, and say next year, or maybe if next semester, if we actually get our act together.

What is this crap? Looks like President Trump and these superintendents are on the same side with respect to opening the schools.

They are making this political when zero children get sick and die from this flu just like all other flus. Young teachers should be fine too. Older teachers should take precautions or find other employment.

The entire civilized world is going back to school. NPRKarens will NEVER stop blaming the federal government for local foul ups.

Oh my god, shut up. We both know it’s not the trump administration dividing this country. He’s not. The left is. Never in my life have I seen the left act so child like. Grow up and go to work. Stop crying about how no one is catering to you while you’re actively destroying stuff

WE Australia 🇦🇺 “opened” schools in Melbourne Victoria 2 months ago and look now right this minute! Total Lockdown and BACK to on-line learning! POTUS realDonaldTrump GovRonDeSantis BrianKempGA pickup the PHONE 📞 and talk to ScottMorrisonMP as WE go back into LOCKDOWN

There is a way. The NFL will test daily. Schools are worth more to the economy than the NFL. There is a saliva test approved by the FDA developed by Rutgers University. All kids can spit. Test daily. Wear masks or shield, bring everyone back for a real school year.

I just thank the gods that my schooling is long over... Until there is a vaccine, there should be no talk about reopening schools - Stay Virtual!

Well, it’s about his buddies making money! Keep them home until safe!
