As the sales of Robin DiAngelo's “White Fragility” have grown, so too has criticism of her work. Columbia University professor John McWhorter says the bestselling book 'openly infantilized Black people' and 'simply dehumanized us.'

views people of color as"almost entirely powerless, and the few with influence do not wield it in the service of racial justice."The AtlanticHe argues that for"DiAngelo, the whole point is the suffering" of white people, who are"taught that pretty much anything they say or think is racist and thus antithetical to the good."'s Steve Inskeep about his criticism of the book and what he thinks is needed to change racist institutions.

And she's got about 25 proscriptions that make it so that any good white person is essentially muzzled. You just have to be quiet. You have said exactly what I believe. I think that what Robin DiAngelo is doing is well-intentioned, but I think ultimately, it's idle. Ultimately, the result of what she would create is a certain educated class of white person feeling better about themselves. And frankly, that's antithetical to her goal, because no matter how she wants it to go, people are going to think that they've done some kind of work.

It is racist, and I don't mean that Robin DiAngelo is a racist. I'm not calling her that. But I'm saying that if you write a book that teaches that Black people's feelings must be stepped around to an exquisitely sensitive degree that hasn't been required of any human beings, you're condescending to Black people. In supposing that Black people have no resilience, you are saying that Black people are unusually weak. You're saying that we are lesser.

JohnHMcWhorter You're not the only ones. Read some of the comments here. Some are from 'POC'.

Am finishing up the audio version of the book now. It’s one of *many* on my topical reading list. A huge amount of what she says is applicable and she makes it accessible to people who still have a lot of work to do on race. It’s a valuable read, but it is NOT the only read.

Well, Columbia University professor John Mcwhorter is a dawdling old fool, with dog shit for brains. Enough of this crap, blm can gth (go to hell) if you didn't catch that.

NPR finally published something good for once.

Robin DiAngelo’s book is the confession of a racist who tries to project her guilt onto the rest of the world. She profits off projecting her racism on America....‘I am racist, therefore you are racist, therefore you need to buy my book and hire me to speak’

shit book, old rag

Because it's horesh+t. It's basically catholic guilt theory (but with white people standing in for all human beings) with a topping of critical race theory on steroids. Not worth the paper its printed on.

nowhitesaviors DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK...

Imagine a person this racist. That person does exist...here she is. WhiteSaviorComplex

Finally read this. The only thing I learned was that the people touting its insight have lived remarkably insulated worlds and have no business lecturing us about race. There is nothing novel or remarkable beyond the two word title. Avenue Q covered this years ago.

And I also get a kick out of the Educated White people and corporations ( HR heads) she and millions of so called intellectual types and politicians continue make life miserable. Modern slavery. It sickens me. Making millions off poverty. What could be worse?

NPR and the leftist/progressives coming for their own! Now this is funny.

Duh.

CHSommers It's success comes from being a book that is openly racist towards whites and a time when white progressives are obsessed with self flagellation. Perhaps that will be enough for them to defend that it is also racist towards blacks.

CHSommers Any disagreement will be considered ________ fragility.

CHSommers Ms DiAngelo would reply that Prof McWhorter's (and others') criticisms of her work simply prove that they suffer from White Fragility AND are still RACIST.

CHSommers

CHSommers Having read the book I see her as a virulent racist. Who projects her own racism onto every single white person in America. She does treat blacks as a subset of humanity. Speaks of them as infants who must be guided by caring white people.

CHSommers Robin DiAngelo is a self professed racist. What would anyone expect?

CHSommers That book sucks

CHSommers True. Very, very true. Racists like Robin DiAngelo are like that, you know? I'll summarize her book for you: 'Dear black people. I'm so sorry that white people are superior in almost every way and I feel so bad about it! let me make it up to you.'

CHSommers Affirming rational, polite behaviour is typically white, she depicts Black people as childish, loud and irrational. If I remember correctly, modern critics gave Rudyard Kipling a lot of shtick for the exact same reason. She is just as condescending and racist.

CHSommers

CHSommers It is time to defund they are BLM radio. They FINALLY got the race war they have been cultivating for 40 years; god bless g_keillor ! AnnCoulter

CHSommers Thank god 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 JohnHMcWhorter

CHSommers Yeah. No shit Sherlock.

The problem with the book is that it lacks any nuance.

What a disgusting grift and blood libel.

It's complete horsesh+t. Threw it in the fire the minute I finished it, and I revere books. It served a better purpose as kindling Here it is, in a nutshell.

Thank you for capitalizing Black. What would Black people do without us inventing new rules most of them never knew they wanted?

If you think her book is bad, you should read her academic journal articles. 🤣

I hope it is picked a part with the same intensity that npr has directed twoards the book of my faith for decades. It is a religion after all.

This book is a circle-jerk for self righteous white people

Belongs in the trash!

It’s a racist book.

Robin is a brilliant capitalist. Like the marketing genius behind the Pet Rock before her, she has gotten rich off of selling absolutely nothing of value to dumb people. She's an absolute genius. Those who pay actual currency for her product? ...the opposite.

It is a great book if you believe that Black people are not quite as capable as you are.

Books are being bought and burned. Ever thought about that scenario?

Because it's low-IQ garbage written for low-IQ degenerate racists.

White privilege is when a bunch of unaccomplished white people on twitter tell a black professor he’s wrong for having an opinion on black people

I know everything is condescending

That's basically the least terrible part of her trashy novel. The rest is so much worse. Anti-white racism, open gaslighting of the entire nation...race grifters have to make hat while the riots burn, I guess.

Well it's White SJW condescending garbage so no surprise.

A book written by a white narcissist that treats blacks as tokens. There I saved everyone's time now you don't have to read it to see how ridiculous and patronizing it is.

As it should be.

It's a really racist book.

That's because it's a hate manifesto; a complete handbook of black KKK.

If you read the book you aren’t surprised by the criticism. Some of it is WF on a national/public scale. McWhorter’s assessment simply did not make sense to me.

John McWhorter has also dedicated the bulk of his writing over the last two decades to denying the existence of systemic racism. Of course White people denying the same are falling all over themselves praising him. DiAngelo is a cheap and easy target for him.

I have read on the reviews from readers criticizing Kendi’s book on “how to be an anti-racist” and I. Oluo’s book on “so you want to talk about race”. These are the very angry, critically biased racists or privileged, who should read “White Fragility”.

It has also infantilized White people, but I suppose no one cares at ?

Reading White Fragility now. As a scientist, whether agreeing w/ a stance or not, I seek to poke holes in a thesis. I find myself agreeing w/ a number of WF's sentiments, but find it problematic that DiAngelo seems to label whites racist w/ no room escape. I'll continue reading.

Read through this again recently. The circular reasoning and double standards are overt. It doesn't take long into reading to find a completely unfalsifiable claim '...accept that racism is unavoidable'. A truly awful work.

Here's white fragility at its finest: Jimmy Carter assuring Mom and Pop Vanilla that those scary Urbanites won't have any help from HIS federal government, if they try to 'invade' white spaces.

tyler_preston20 How people buy this garbage?

Robin DiAngelo is an extremely racist white woman and McWhorter is a black man so this definitely speaks volumes. Plus that book is completely insane trash...

John's wrong.

sirthomasdrake Many of the people coming here and throwing a fit on Twitter have never sat down and really thought about how race effects their lives.

Well yeah, it was a book written by a racist so that makes sense.

Too much for NPR even.

Thankfully, I'm not racist so I won't have to water my time.

She’s a white supremacist. Seems valid to criticize her work.

Because it is literally a book about a white liberal woman who is telling everyone how racist she is...

May I suggest 'So you want to talk about race' by Ijeoma Oluo.

After reading her book & other books on racism by black authors, I can see how her book can start to open the eyes of reluctant white people on racism but it doesn’t go far enough. She’s not living it, experiencing it. She can learn about it, but it’s not the same.

It is ridiculous to imply that if you disagree with the hypothesis of DiAngelo: you’re racist. Also a totalitarian attitude. Unscientific. It exists only in the racist-world of people who believe the scientific method is racist. Basically, dissidence, diversity = forbidden. woke

I’m not a linguist but I don’t see a problem with asking white people to be less self centered and more sensitive to black people’s feelings. Being respectful and sensitive is not patronizing. Is that what he’s saying?

Well, she did say she was a racist - what did you expect?

Robin DiAngelo believes almost everything a member of the KKK or Neo-Nazi group does, she only differs in the end product. Infantilizing POCs is white supremacy, call it what it is and I'm disgusted by it. She's a grifter getting wealthy by pushing white supremacy.

I think the book is fine, but it does encourage navel gazing rather than actual activism. There are tons of people who are very passionate about talking about racism but rarely actually show up and do something.

Anything that says denial of the thing is proof of the thing is completely unscientific and should be laughed at and mocked for the hogwash that it is.

Aee you seriously calling her screed of projecting her own racism on the rest of the population work?

Your face when you realize that you're the racists (Stop being racist, NPR, just fucking stop already)

'ultimately, the result of what she would create is a certain educated class of white person feeling better about themselves' activism in a nutshell

Robin di Angelo’s confessional of her own white supremacy is hers and hers alone. She cannot absolve herself of her own racism or lessen her own guilty conscience by her desperate attempt to share it with strangers Robin di Angelo is simply a grifter

not just McWhorter many leading black thinkers hate this white 'woke' racism of low expectations

John McWhorter is a genius, people should seriously listen to his criticism.

Everything is racist especially to the woke crowd

White Fragility is one of the worst, most racist, books ever written. Listen to: The Unraveling | Glenn Loury & John McWhorter [The Glenn Show]

The book is written by a racist, projecting her bias to others. She's has no facts backing up this theory. She's a critical theorist school who desire to dismantle & deconstruct everything they encounter. She is very wrong. The free west has never been better. Ask a Uyghur.

Watch the woke side with the white chick

This particular criticism is hard for me because I’ve read authors (Austin Channing Brown; Ta-Nehisi Coates; etc.) that specifically name the exhaustion of having to hear ignorant statements, having to experience insensitive actions, having to explain things to white people, etc.

It's criticized because it's garbage....not because of its success you hacks.

The most racist book since mein Kampf. Hey you do you npr

“We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.” -The Fourteen Words of the white supremacist movement “It is crucial for white people to acknowledge and recognize our collective racial experience.” -Robin DiAngelo

That’s because it infantilizes and dehumanizes them.

You have become a deranged Dem talking piece. Sad stuff...

Soft bigotry of low expectations.

It’s a dreadful book in many ways. Apparent to me when I read it many months ago. Yuck.

The religion of Christianity uses a powerful trick to compel churchgoers to the faith by telling everyone that they are born into sin. It is inescapable, and the way they atone for the sin is through the church. DiAngelo uses this same trick on white people.

It is THE textbook example of the soft bigotry of low expectations.

I'm so happy that john mcwhorter approached why race baiter, race hustler and playing the race card can and is only used against black people. So happy that a linguist was able to see and address how none of those labels are put on the kkk, white supremacists, etc.

I read the book, and I am white. John's wrong.

White fragility is a racist concept

Promoting the book of a white woman only worsens economic inequality. No one should give her another dime until she gives away to black causes all her income in excess of the median black individual income and all he wealth in excess of the median black individual wealth.

hellooclarisse

The premise of this book is confusing. Should I read it to feel guilty or should I read it to further define the the word “racist”? Neither. Webster’s Dictionary does an outstanding job defining words.

Bah hum bug! It made me really think about my attitudes and actions towards all people of color. That’s a positive step towards dealing with universal racism!

Her book “What Does It Mean to Be White?: Developing White Racial Literacy” is a more in-depth scholarly analysis of explaining Racism to Whites. She openly talks about the issues that come from being a White Woman addressing Whites on this issue.

Funny seeing performative white people blindly supporting this book while suggesting McWhorter is racist ... toward black people. SUPRISE! He’s a brilliant thinker who happens to be black. So DiAngelo may be right about just one thing: white ppl have got *a lot* of work to do.

It dehumanizes us all.

BethMcKenna53 weren't you just talking about this book? What is your take?

This is a really misleading interpretation of the premise and content of this book. Wow!

Along with his I don't care about being a racist, Mr Professor does not like being told & probably doesn't want to wear a mask either. He has no idea of what racism is & lacks skills to interact with people of color. His job has made him selfrighteous. A racist in the closet.

Disappointing horseshit from JohnHMcWhorter, blithely promoting the religious belief that racism is 'pervasive/unconscious' (presumably in whites) and that WF is primarily a condescension of black people, rather than the ill-intentioned shaming of ALL white people as 'racist'.

Excellent. Even Columbia (where it all started) didn't intend for Critical Theory to expose itself like a drunken bum on a streetcorner.

Yup

beware grifters

Only ignorant establishment democrats eat this stuff up. Remember they're 'woke.' I've never voted Republican in my life. Just don't consume mass media like the trained sheep do.

When the Turks slaughtered my people and stole our land they also stole our history, good and bad, burned our books and demolished our buildings and surprisingly nothing good came of it. Now before the dull ones think I’m a racist this posts asks the question “where does it end?”

Only idiots would recommend and read this trash

White fragility is how to be anti-racist for dummies. It reads like a bad parody, that it’s a best seller is a sad commentary on people who buy it.

Wow, surprised NPR would have a dissenting voice on their platform!

mcwhorter is bad

Maybe if John McWhorter actually sat down and read the book he wouldn't have criticized it so much.

I’d go a step further and call the book racist af

Absolutely it is, white savior complex.

hot garbage
