Australia is right to adopt a suppression, rather than elimination, strategy when it comes to managing COVID-19, according to Australian National University Microbiologist Professor Peter Collignon.

Australia is undertaking a suppression strategy, which is focused on reducing transmissions and strict social distancing to ensure hospital intensive care units are not overwhelmed. The eradication strategy, adopted by NZ, strives to get rid of the virus completely but involves a near-complete economic shut down.

“And we’re talking about probably two years down the line before that’s likely to be widespread and available, not only in Australia, but internationally.” Mr Collignon said a strong elimination policy might bring about elimination in some places but would be difficult to achieve and sustain in large populations.
