The world's heaviest soaring bird flaps its wings just 1% of the time during flight, researchers have found.
The Andean condor, which can weigh up to 15kg, makes use of air currents to stay airborne for hours at a time. The study is part of a collaboration between Swansea University's Prof Emily Shepard and Dr Sergio Lambertucci in Argentina. They wanted to find out more about how birds' flight efforts vary depending on environmental conditions.found 75% of the birds' flapping was associated with take-off.
If I was a condor, I'd flap my wings like 50 times. RIP to birbs, but I'm different.
bevcog Ready for a big hug:)
Now, if we can only find a politician that only flaps his gums 1% of the time.
And, this is important because?
When your wings are about the size of AN-225's wings you don't need to flap them much.
Well that’s groundbreaking news!!!!! Do these researchers get paid for coming up with this crap?
Always found it disconcerting such beautiful iconic birds are carrion eaters.
Jeez lockdown got everyone bored
cool! Glider birds!
Fantastic news, it’ll save me the time studying them.
Hmm, I guess the reason I haven't been successful in my flight attempts is I flap too much (heads to the roof).
That's efficiency. Evolution is amazing ❗❗❗
It's a turkey eagle
Bit like me....good in thermals😉
'condor birds'? You mean 'condor'.... otherwise you'd have to say pigeon bird, sparrow bird, hawk bird....... PedantsRus
Lazy f***s
like 99% of this country
such vital work you do
is that what 'researchers' do all chuffing day
Gliders.
I calculated 2%, strange...
Sounds like Piers Morgans approach to positivity.
Even less when you chop them up and put them in a soup. visit_wuhan
I have coworkers with a similar relationship to their work.
Need to adopt that kind of efficiency!
lazy
Lazy bastards. Lol.
Lazy bastards
Love birds
Useful stuff!
Amazing gliders. Spectacular to watch.
99% efficiency, 1% effort.
YEAH BUT WHY DO I HAVE TO WHERE A MASK
Cheers Geoff
