Specialist schools say they should not be forced to reopen on Monday due to serious concerns about the safety of staff and their most vulnerable students after successive days of triple-digit growth in the number of COVID-19 cases in Victoria.

Mr Peverett said there were "significant concerns about the health and safety of our staff and our students during a time when education shouldn’t be the priority but health and safety should".

Physical distancing was largely impossible and hygiene more challenging, he said, with some staff required to help with toilet breaks and feeding. In addition, children tend to travel further to attend these schools, including from COVID-19 hotspots and the public housing towers put in hard lockdown last week.

"The advice of Victoria’s Chief Health Officer is that schools continue to be a safe learning and working environment," he said. There are 108 specialist schools in Victoria, ranging from autism specialist schools to physical disability schools, facilities for students with mild to severe intellectual disability, and those that focus on social, emotional and behavioural needs.

Remote Learning was always going to be challenging, definitely for Sp. schools, however our State’s situation is now extremely serious. CT is very high, many cases and/or clusters in schools that has resulted in closures late last term & during holidays, including Sp. schools.

Students with special need are ill equipped to do remote learning. I am pleased the Premier is Listening to the Parents.

So the virus doesn’t recognise special schools but it does mainstream schools? And mainstream pupils are less equipped to deal with social distancing guidelines? Ok got it.

Surely reopening schools should be orchestrated postcode by postcode based on prevalence of Covid

How can it be OK for certain age groups of students to return but not others. The virus isn’t going to be selective on who it infects. This government is just ridiculous in its handling of COVID19 and every decision they have made is for a corrupt purpose.

for the love of god, it's a few hundred cases, it's not major, it's not deadly you are just spouting virus porn and you have to admit now that publishing a nonsense maths model without question was wrong and stop terrorising the country

How can the school fully protect the child and their staffs safety. We dont know where the parents, guardians etc have been the last few weeks. Schools are a breeding ground for germs.

NO schools should be reopening today!
