OTTAWA - April van Ert should have been relieved when her son’s Vancouver school reopened on June 1. For months she had been juggling her busy job and her 11-year-old son’s education amid the COVID-19 shutdowns.

“If that’s the plan if there’s a resurgence in the fall, then I don’t see how I’m going to avoid reducing the hours I work,” she said. But school boards, teachers’ unions, medical professionals, and parents are increasingly rallying against the model, saying the risk of COVID-19 should not outweigh the harm closures cause to the emotional well-being and education of children.

Women, who are more likely to work in the service sector, saw more COVID-19 job losses than men, and childcare issues have made it harder for them to return to work, Statistics Canada data shows. Lower-income women were the hardest hit. “Parents are nervous, and rightfully so,” Maryam Monsef, Canada’s Minister for Women, said this week. “We need women to get back to work so that we can restart the engines of our economy.”In populous Ontario, the provincial government is being urged to look to Quebec rather than British Columbia for its back-to-school plan.

But there are downsides. There were 53 active COVID-19 cases among teachers and students the week of June 5th alone, Quebec’s education ministry said. By contrast, there was just one known case at a British Columbia school in all of June.

We're going to have to change the way we do things during this pandemic, it's not going to just go back to normal until we have a vaccine or a proper way to protect ourselves.

This is a parent problem, not a 'mom' problem. It's also the parent's childcare problem. TEACHERS ARE NOT YOUR BABYSITTERS.

Canada opening schools is worrying moms? 😮 so moms in 🇺🇸 must be completely panicked or as stupid as trump! It had to be said. I know my grandkids are not going back to school! Holy 🐮 way to dangerous! Covid_19 TrumpVirusCatastrophe

I think if you live longer you can acquire knowledge later, why so much rush to send the kids to school?

We had schools open at the start of this . I don’t remember them being hotbeds of the virus .

But not dads though. They just retreat to their cigar smoke filled offices and write copy for Lucky Strike because apparently this is the 1950’s.

This is so ridiculous 😠

Leaves 'moms' in a lurch? Uh, I believe this is a parental issue, not a female issue. Update your title. And welcome to 2020.

Don't do it! Keep your kids away from leftist indoctrination camps!

Why pediatricians are pushing for kids to go back to school in the fall'There's no question school is important for children -- not just for education purposes, but for their development, for their mental health, for nutrition and even for health care.' It sounds like there is serious concern among pediatric professionals that some kids are not safe at home with their own parents. They know that coming out with those kinds of statements will cause a huge uproar, so it's easier for them to say 'school is a better place for kids'. So they can make money from dead children. right. and heck let's do it in about three weeks with no funding and no real plan. just insane. how many children will die because of this? nuts.
