Parents in England who do not send their children back to school in September will face fines, government says But head teachers say fines are not the 'right approach'

Mr Williamson, speaking on LBC, said penalty fines for non-attendance would be part of school being compulsory again next term, unless there were"good reasons" such as a local spike in infections.

"It's not about 1 metre, it's not about 2 metres," he told BBC Breakfast, saying that safety would be based on"reducing the number of transmission points" within schools. During the return to school for some classes during the lockdown, attendance has been voluntary and the system of fining parents has been suspended.

The decisions about fines made by head teachers are referred to local authorities, who can issue a fixed penalty notice of £60, rising to £120 if not paid within 21 days.

BorisJohnson If that is the case. 1 Parents should sue the government 4 no proper education since the pandemic 2. ALL university students should receive ALL THIS YEARS FEES BACK. 3 Any child or parent who catches covid19 from school. Gets compensation.

And the UK have the gaul to criticize China.

My decision will depend on how things are in September. If the number of cases was still as it is now, then it would have to be a fine for me I’m afraid. I wouldn’t trust the school to keep him safe

AGREE ! Cattle prods are far more effective !

It won't be full time anyway, due to social distance.guess that's why they practicing with playgrounds this weekend.

What happens when they schools won’t open? Who gets the fines then?

Fines are ok if you’re taking your kids on holiday in term time. You just can’t make it up with these teachers.

The absolute NERVE to deflect the governments incompetence and blame worried and cautious parents is appalling.

And so they should. ScumMedia DefundBBC

I'd like to see that stick in court

I think better information and reassurance is a better way to start with.

Pretty please for lockdown violations but 'fine the buggers for education' great er init...

Well done. Can go to beach than can go to schools too

BBCPolitics What is then, allow the trade unions and their left wing momentum followers to damage children's education further 🤔

I think they said ‘could’ face fines not ‘will’!

Fine the teachers who are refusing to go back.!

This government really does like pissing people off doesn’t it

Perhaps the Head teachers would like to spend their time going around and rounding them up? In the days past there was no excuse for not going to school and you were sanctioned for being late because of delays whilst doing a paper rounds.

But fines are ok if you take them out of schools for holidays.

Dominic Cummings was not fined for breaking lockdown rules when lives mattered... get your priorities straight... loads of ways to incentivise kids back to school rather then fining!

Lazy kids who never go to school and always on PlayStation or Xbox bringing their school-less mates round and getting up at weird hours have no ambitions in life, and I support govt on this move not teachers not parents not family rights organisations and not youth rights either.

...some teachers and head teachers are enjoying furlough/grant and in this process have become lazy to head back to schools.

They're too busy sitting on crowded beaches to send their kids to school!!!!

BBCPolitics They might think so, but schools are officially run by governors who will need to make the decision to open and prove it is safe, presumably they can tell the gov't they cant guarantee safety of kids and cant take all of them back?

Go long term Universal Credit and put it down to PTSD due to Covid and homeschool your kids. But get in quick before they give it to all the illegals coming across the channel 👍😎

What's the fine for going on a road trip to Barnard Castle in peak lockdown? Asking for a friend

Risk the fines.

Totally unenforceable and pathetic. If parents don’t send their children back it’s because they have zero faith in the government’s strategies. Schools cannot be ‘COVID secure’ by September and anxious parents will be within their rights to keep children away.

That little girl looks like my tattie that gov pinched off me and I get that feeling its her everything I look at photo my aching broken heart can't handle anymore the published her photo once before and tried convincing me it wasn't her uk gov are evil x

Good luck with that . They need to look how many of the cabinet broke lockdown rules but nothing to say about that . Rules for one rules for another ..

About time!

The working class need to understand, their labor is more important than their lives. Get back to work you lazy peasants!

Not happening in Scotland

Shocking not right at all

As if parents haven’t got enough to be worried about 😡

In the psychopathic model. There's a charge for assembling and a charge for not assembling.

Fine. I guess it depends on situation in September as well. If not careful, UK can end up with rocketing numbers again just like the States. We’ve sent ours back to school already since the numbers in London at the moment are fairly okay.

If parents want to homeschool their kids what’s the problem? Homeschooling has always been legal in the UK. As long as they are learning it shouldn’t matter. Surely it would make it easier for the schools & the kids who are there.

Quite right. Any teachers refusing should be required to ghost a nurse on a covid ward and take home £14 net an hour for their trouble

Fine, if they can guarantee it’s safe. If not, they can go fuck themselves.

Think. Teachers of 40 to 60 years ago taught the DUNCES who decree decisions such as this covid-19 'scam-demic' 2020 NEW NORMAL fascists rule.

But that's the way u deal with parents who take the kids out for a week to try and get a holiday at an affordable price !!!!

In September we will make a decision as parents regarding if we feel it is safe for our children to return. If we decide that it is not or there is insufficient evidence to support this then they will not return you won’t force us into potentially putting there child at harm

How exactly is bully boy tactics going to help, GavinWilliamson gives us zero confidence in sending our kids back to school as it is but this just makes it 💯 times worse 🤬

My 8 year old is on the shielding list. With shielding “paused” from 1st August we are now told, if he doesn’t attend school in Sept we will be fined!! How much more stress and anxiety can you put on families in our position? educationgovuk GavinWilliamson shielding

Fine away, if government keep rushing out of lockdown and infections arent right down, my child will not be going, he willxbe home schooled, so a big F U boris and ur education secretary

Teachers should strike that will really F*ck the Tories up!

I'm a grandparent but would implore everybody concerned, whatever their task in this *Please, please, please put the children first*. It has been a unique, baffling, worrying time for children of all ages. They need stability for a while.

BBC shit stirring again

What about self employed music teachers ? We have been ignored both by the media and the government for the past 3 months

So can we fine the school now for not taking our year 1 child - I didn’t think so!!!!

Oh to have a teachers union who had the education of children at the heart of its' aspirations. I guess the harsh reality is they are there for their members, rather than the kids. Good job the govt are thinking about the children.

The Government are a shambles. Don't think this virus has a gentle side. If more people are infected by Covid, then we are all screwed. And it will be down to a British PM who is no more than a clown with a Churchill hat on.

Teachers need to dig their heads out of the ground. If people have genuine reasons to keep children away from school then there should be no problem proving it.

Home schools are legal, right? So switch to homeschooling if that's what you want.

Got to find a way of generating more money into the economy.

We're supposed to use our common sense and not expect the government to tell us what to do... Until the government decides to tell us what to do.

Schools should be back in now. Parents have to work and can’t all work from home. So much pressure being put on parents from employers. Get kids back to school.

What's next🤔 statecontrol

I won’t send my child until a vaccine comes out. See you in court then.

BBCPolitics What about sacking lazy teachers who sat on their backsides doing nothing for months and refused to do anything to help. Will teachers be sacked for refusing to work?

Fine me

Another clueless policy from a clueless government.

I will send my kids back to school when is safe to do, none of them have been out of the house since lockdown. This government only cares about money , not saving lives. By September we will be in lockdown again.

Yet headteachers have been quick to fine parents in the past when school time missed, though not when the teachers are taking industrial action, then the parents can go whistle.

No consideration mentioned for BAME families considering the fact that they are at a very much higher risk for mortality from Covid19

A Bit harsh :/

What are supposed to do leave them at home and not bother who will you be blaming then ?

Govt are right to do it, there's really no excuse from the new term and besides, many parents can't afford to stop at home all the time looking after their children and need to get back to work to start earning again. Also not everybody can home school kids especially shift staff

FAKE NEWS!! THERE IS NOTHING STOPPING A PARENT HOME SCHOOLING THEIR CHILDREN!!

Parents in England who do not send their children back to school in September will face fines, justice league says But head teachers say fines are not the 'right approach'

philmcnulty open the schools.

So will Boris Johnson resign if any schools have a flare up of COVID leading to the death of a child?

I’ll be waiting to see what goes on in terms of getting kids back to school properly and exactly what they’ll be being taught before I make my decision.

We need the children back to school. Sept carry on social distancing where possible, one week on then one week off split the classes. For the safety of teachers and staff. Children are super spreaders as much as we love them.

Dear No.10, get cases down and I'll send my kids back to school. I won't be bullied into putting my family's health at risk.

BBCPolitics It’s a continuation of government policy, people must learn to live with the virus, even if that means living with early death in multi generational households and children knowing it was them who brought the virus home. Some policy...

So what is the government’s plan to implement a return to school?

BBCPolitics Tone deaf Education Minister. What a Tosser

cruedo thoughts?

Completely wrong way to go about it. Most parents want their children to go back to school. Threatening them with fines is ridiculous. Most people just want reassurance that their children are going to be safe, & not come home with Covid and spread it to vulnerable family members

Will that include Leicester and any other places on local lockdown ? What a complete mess this all is.

Stop paying their wages for sitting around on their ass. They would be a lot keener to return to work. If the parents refuse to send their kids back don't fine them. Straight to prison. If they sit in a park alday. Go on a protest. Go on holiday. Then they can go back to school.

So all MP kids going back too? Will they get fines for not sending there kids?

Sadly many people only do things to avoid being caught rather than it being the right thing. If it needs fines then so be it. Children are more likely to get run over getting to school than catching COVID when they’re there.

COVID19 school outbreaks nearly doubled last week. Schools accounted for nearly 20% of the outbreaks last week, compared to 12% in the previous week. Think of the 148+ education workers who have died from COVID19. Consider others.

The replies on this 😂 ....what a bunch of hysterical fannies

Fuck me this government is dire.. If parents don't feel safe sending their kids to school then do not fucking force them.. That is horrific and malicious.. Especially with covid concerns.. Put screening in schools.. Actually make track and trace.. MakeSchoolsSafe

hasn't this been one scamdemic..

There is bound to be a second wave and parents aren't going to risk their child's lives and who would listen to what Gavin Williamson says anyway because there have been so many u turns so this will most likely be another

Good luck fining millions of people. Parents will just deregister their kids!

Even if the pandemic is still spreading?

BBCPolitics Once again the Government getting it totally wrong and attempt to apply their draconian right wing philosophy to problems that need good organisation, cooperation and investment rather than the threat of the law. I’m sure private schools won’t have problems with space and staff.

BBCPolitics they thought it was the right response to absences right up until now.... sudden change of mind there...

Is it still true that it takes 72 hours for covid-19 to die on fabrics, books, shoes, school bags for example.

Are kids safe? Because the BBC harbours paedophiles.

Let's wait to see what the situation is come September, until then we are all just staring into the crystal ball.

BBCPolitics About time! More children in shops and on beeches than at school!

Bring it on

Teachers will do anything to stay away from school. They never wanted to be there in the first place. Time to change them out for professionals.

Cummings gets away scot free and worried parents get fined

They should have a been allowed back now!!! We can go to the pub and get pissed and most likely not distance!! Yet my son can't go to school amd learn properly which also affects me getting a job after i lost it a couple of mths ago due to redundancy 🤬. I have no help!

The government need to get in the bin 🗑 this entire thing has been a shambles.

Will they be willing to stand trial for the inevitabile deaths that will ensue?

That’s it, fine families concerned for their children’s well being and let thousands of lock down breaker protesters off Scott free. This government really is a ‘piece of work’.

Ministers who do not return to Parliament in September will not get my vote! ChildrensLivesMatter

Where does this leave homeschoolers?

I'd love to know how these fines would hold if legally challenged. Concerns for the health & safety of your child is a legitimate reason not to send your child to school.

Just send them back to school ffs

That’s going to be helpful! Some many children are going to find going back to school a challenge. An empathetic approach with mental health support is a must. Punishing parents is just going to widen a gap and ultimately punish children 😢😡

School isn't optional - if schools are open in September, ALL children should be there.

too right ! see my tweet!

If parents don't want to send their children back to school there is an alternative. It's called home-schooling. Perfectly legal, no fines, and holiday when you like.

Surely they can't ever fine people for taking term time holidays after all this when the schools have reassured parents that 5 months off school won't harm their kids education and parents are capable of doing their job in their spare time 😂

Public education should not be mandatory by default.

rightly so I agree.

Start all the lawsuits against the idiots who decided that. You're gonna tell me I have to send my kid into an almost certain infectious situation in the middle of a raging pandemic. Go to hell.

It hardly affects children and zero evidence they spread it - they should be back in school already.

Not a problem. If they don't go back we should be able to charge the Government then? They need to be back now. Half a year without education is a National Disgrace

How many people were fined from the protests the past few weeks? And they want to go after scared families because of their inconsistent advice and mixed messages.

You’re telling Tories fines are not the right approach. 🤔 What can you possibly mean? Tut tut.

One the one hand it’s right to be concerned about child education... but it’s fair to say that health is more important... wait to see how Leicester (and other areas) pan out first maybe...?

I bet Kenyan governement is learning from UK . We plan to open in September that is kenyan governement move, unlike the great nation of UK, Kenya has covid soaring to greater heights now ..it was double digits in March and now it's triple digits. Copycat governement

yes government not always right!!!!!

Good

Your stupid idea BorisJohnson or Dominic Cummings

Oh fuck off luv, might just spit on you xx

That’s just ridiculous !

How about Parents Prosecuting the UK government should their Children become infected with the COVID19 virus How about all families Prosecuting the UK government for the loss of their loved ones because of the failures of this current administration

How about Parents Prosecuting the UK government should their Children become infected with the COVIDQ9 virus. How about all families Prosecuting the UK government for the loss of their loved ones because of the failures of this current administration

Fuck that shit

Good.

So much for the government saying we want parents to trust us.
