BUKIT MERTAJAM: When schools reopened after a three-month closure due to the pandemic, school bus operators took steps to ensure students adhered to the standard operating procedure (SOP).

A check by The Star at SMJK Jit Sin in Taman Rambai here found students heading straight for their waiting school buses and vans when class was dismissed at about 2pm yesterday, under the supervision of teachers.

School bus driver Yeap Soon Chooi, 64, said he made sure passengers wore face masks when they got on the bus in the morning and when they were returning home. Yeap, a school bus driver for more than 30 years, said it was not difficult to ensure students followed distancing rules as there were only 15 to 20 of them at any time.

He said the maximum seating capacity in his bus was 40 but as only Forms Five and Six students returned to school, he was able to ensure spacing between them.“However, I make sure students who get into my van wear a face mask. And I’ll watch out for those who show symptoms such as cough, cold or fever, as they will not be allowed to come on board,” he said.
