Sydney’s Inner West Council is facing a string of criminal charges over alleged child protection failures at a childcare centre, with the mayor and other elected officials kept in the dark about the investigation until just weeks ago.
Council sources speaking on the condition of anonymity said charges relate to children leaving the facility without supervision, but it is not known what occurred after they left.Inner West mayor Darcy Byrne said he and other publicly elected officials had not been made aware of the incidents and subsequent criminal charges until late May, more than a month after a court attendance notice was issued to council.
Once councillors were informed of the charges brought by the state, Cr Byrne convened an extraordinary meeting on June 3 so “elected representatives could be properly briefed”.
Rabe9 This extraordinary and unprecedented I think!
