The ABC will axe up to 250 jobs from across the country in a bid to save money after going millions of dollars over budget. Aunty’s controversial ABC Life website and ABC Comedy division will be rebranded and face job cuts after facing sustained criticism for its content.
Managing director David Anderson told staff ABC Life would be rebranded ABC Local and instead of providing tips for how to cook tofu, it will shift its focus to suburban and regional news coverage. ABC Comedy will be reworked to focus on science, education and religion. Mr Anderson also revealed 75 per cent of content makers would be based outside of Sydney by 2025 – a response to criticism that the ABC is too saturated through inner-city regions. The move is expected to save $40 million.
