Latest updates: workers on parental leave can still get furlough payments; Boris Johnson to face Keir Starmer at PMQs

In an interview with Sky News Rishi Sunak, the chancellor, has said that it is a tragedy that so many children will not be back in school until the autumn. If they had locked down earlier and been stricter it wouod have bought us more time to get PPE and track and trace all going we would have Lower infection rate, deaths. And therfore out of this much earlier for their precious economy.

60k dear and counting is a matter for pride. Children missing a month more of school is a tragedy. Mr Sunak could do with learning the meaning of some words.

Maybe his ‘Government’ should have spent some time coming up with a resourced plan to open schools then rather than just telling schools to sort it out themselves with existing resources?

Well you should have discussed the options with head teachers, unions & local council's before announcing to the world that school's were going to re-open.

It is and I must agree with Rushi Sunack. But his is an attempt to absolve his government of any accountability in schools being out so long. Had his government been competent in tackling covid-19 maybe the impact on business and schools could've been minimised.

The Guardian had a role in children being denied an education

A tragedy manufactured by the government itself.

As opposed to our PM being 'proud' of 66,000 tragedies....

Your gov caused it in the first place. 🙄

Then own it.

Not as much of a tragedy as killing off some caretakers and lunch ladies thougu
