For thousands of university students, online learning was not what they paid for. Motivation has dropped and many fear they haven't learnt content they need to progress their degrees | natassiazc

are cut under cost-saving measures. "There’s huge anger, and there’s a lot of demand around fee compensation," he says. One target has been the student services and amenities fee, which is capped by the federal government at $308 per student each year. With students unable to participate in clubs, societies or campus life under social distancing restrictions, online petitions argue this should be reduced.

Sydney University education student Adriana Pazin, who has been uploading pre-recorded videos of herself speaking each week instead of participating in classroom discussions, says many students around her were stagnating in their degrees. They either deferred classes or hadn't learnt much, she says. High-achieving student Manjot Kaur has started handing in assessments late since learning moved online. Some of her classes disappeared altogether. Instead of tutorials, students would submit a weekly twritten answer to an online forum. There isn’t depth of learning. Usually my favourite part of university is getting into debates, talking about things in person – a lot of that is completely gone," Kaur says.

"Our ambition is that every student will have at least one class on campus, as our online learning continues to support collaboration and interactivity wherever possible," a University of Sydney spokeswoman says. The Australian National University will deliver courses both remotely and on campus in semester two, while the University of Wollongong has extended its remote teaching mode for the rest of the year.

Sydney University business student Jamie Reid says while he did not feel his studies had been affected, his social interactions were. "You don’t have your pre or post class conversations with classmates," he says. "Trying to expand your social circle is very limited."Spence says some students had responded very positively to some of the flexibility afforded by online learning and creative ways to use it.

natassiazc Undergraduate education is just expensive credentialing. Students devote little time to it, because classes run at the lowest possible level to accommodate overseas students, and the universities pass everyone to maintain their throughput of customers. The system needs reform.

natassiazc well boo bloody hoo that's their problem isn't it they r so spoilt they look at this as abt them & how much they paid. instead of being self-motivated & realising how privileged they are, they want everything fed to them with a silver spoon. I am so sick of this poor me attitude

natassiazc I feel sorry for students who were just starting their first semester. It can be hard to adapt from secondary to tertiary education, and these kids were forced to go online after only 1 week of face to face lectures. I hope there will be special consideration for these students.

natassiazc Oh poor bastards will have to do some work

natassiazc well who could have foreseen covids affect on university learning. Its going to take time to improve online learning, its just unfortunate for these students who are the first lot of test subjects.

natassiazc I'm sure they weren't doing any learning while waving placards and screeching obscenities on the streets if Sydney.

natassiazc STUDY HARDER , turn off the TV, stop protesting. Now get to work ya bums !

natassiazc unis should have given discount for online terms They r ripping off students

natassiazc Drop out. Go get a real job.

natassiazc About time there was a story about this. My son has lost the plot with his course AND HE WOULD BE FINISHED THIS YEAR. Im working overtime trying re-engage him. My daughter’s course is a shambles. It now all assessment and no content. They are paying a FORTUNE for this!

natassiazc University is a waste of time and money for all but a small minority. God is telling these students to do something better.

natassiazc Professor Clementi reveals how coronavirus today is a hundred times weaker than March. Massimo Clementi is a full Professor of Microbiology and Virology, University Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Milan, Italy. It's an absolutely macroscopic difference.

natassiazc That’s why tafe is important one practical the other theory,,books & research along with someone at the front narrating an agenda is skeptical depending on ideals, but actually learning on the job beats anything.

natassiazc More excuses for the wanna-have-it-all generation

natassiazc Well gender studies wasn’t going to get them a job anyway.

Education chief blames ATAR for 'profoundly distorting' final years of schoolNSW Education Standards Authority chair Peter Shergold wants to keep ATAR but said it should be coupled with information about lessons learned outside school, in casual jobs or carer responsibilities as the basis of an 'education passport' | YESSSSS He's absolutely right. The only reason to choose certain subjects is because of university (highly overrated) admission requirements. Aside from that, you'd be crazy not to game the system by choosing subjects you might be less interested in, but likely to score higher in. Let’s give all kids an award. That will make everyone feel good. Education system is a lost cause.
