Racism in Ireland: 'When I was younger I used to think the whole of Ireland was hateful’

. “I’ve seen it first hand; you’re in a group of lads walking and they’ll stop you ask ‘where are you going, where do you live?’ I’ve had friends who were searched by gardaí for no reason.

Mpame, who took part in last Monday’s Black Lives Matter protest in Dublin, says in the wake of Floyd’s death, black Irish people finally feel confident to speak openly about their experiences of racism. “I’m probably the only black male in the Irish fashion industry and I didn’t feel I could talk about these things before. But now there’s a platform to be open and people are paying attention.”

“I remember walking to school and people calling me and my sister the ‘N’ word and there was nothing we could do about it. It felt like an identity crisis; I was half Irish but these people didn’t want me.”

Sick of this dribble

'White Irish people have never had to think about this'. Maybe they were too busy fighting colonial rule.

✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿

Not true. Irish Times, shame on you!

Not true. Just another lie from the Irish Times.

Wrong. I got bullied a lot as a child because back then being half irish was the same as being completely foreign. On top of that I wasn't raised as a Catholic. Being white didn't make me immune to discrimination. Ireland is far better now, but it wasn't always so progressive.

'No blacks. No dogs. No Irish!' A not uncommon sign in the front window of many a 1950's London boarding house. And not uninterestingly, in that order too.

He's right.! Sure I experienced a lot of anti Protestant discrimination. And I'm even Protestant (not that it matters), we just didn't go to mass. I get the impression that the church and school encouraged it.

Generalisations do nothing to help this argument

Hold on hold on hold on. This is why the situation in the USA dissipates. The USA was built on slavery immigration and injustice. The Irish were those people. I won't accept that someone born into a life in the USA with no opportunities can claim to be equal with that in Ireland

Prejudice or snobbery still exists in the south against northern people. I’ve often been asked how did u get an Irish passport .

Love thesr faitytales

The travellers..enough said. Ireland is very racist.

Not trying to be ignorant or anything but I’ve had a great experience with the gardai. They pull people over that look suspicious as it is part of their job. People who wear tracksuits wether white or black have a higher chance of getting pulled over.

You thought wrong so!! Turns out we all need to be educated!!

My thoughts on people's response to this article are too long for Twitter so here's my FB post on the matter. LoveNotHate dontdiscriminate blacklivesmatter

'White Irish people have never had to think about this'.... Really? Whoever decided on that subheading should read a book on the experience of the Irish abroad, or even on this island (Penal Laws might be a start). Racism is racism.

If he doesn't like it here why doesn't he leave - nobody's stopping him.

The pervasive willingness to embrace victimhood is astounding. I'm.white I'm Irish working class-whatever that means these days- and this white privilege accusation is just beyond absurd.

Seriously if its so bad, lm sure there are plenty of other countries available for him to go and live in, especially as he's so unhappy, why stay in such a hateful country

This is incredible. SorchaPollak has managed to find the voices of some black Irish people. We should stop for a moment to listen to what they have to tell us about their experiences growing up in Ireland.

What about 'No Irish' in 70's and 80's in UK?... Irish nation for decades and hundreds of years experienced discrimination and aggression. Do you think slavery was only in America? How would you call exhausting work in British factories and Lords for slice of bread years ago?

The Irish have and never will be racist, not reading this! 🙄

RCallahanKO Check out the responses. Sounds like 1970s Southie. Canada is the place bro.

And yet people still want to come to Ireland by any means.

I mean we had 800 years of apartheid but ok.

This is why the news media is dying!! Trying to create a story which could lead to drama on the streets, then they can write more stories about the drama. Who holds these journos to account? Boycott their papers👊

This movement is trying to end a race war and the media seem to want to perpetuate one!

You need to understand the history of the Irish Republic better. Many Irish people face racism on a daily basis in other countries. Racism is not always on the basis of colour 😷🇮🇪

Racism In Ireland:

More bullshite from the Irish Times...

shIT times, doing their best to start a race war

I'm starting to feel I should be ashamed to be a white Male. That's the feeling in the world lately.

How about the fact that we were slaves for 800 years and in the USA no Dogs or Irish allowed . But we all got over it unlike BLM

Still not as bad as current anti semitism in Ireland

It wasn’t all sunshine and roses if you were a Catholic in the North. There was a policy of deliberate employment and housing discrimination against Catholics for many years - not to mention brutality by Loyalist Militias, the British Army (assassinations by the SAS) etc.

Race baiting just like the MSM in America. We didn't have black people as slaves. In fact we were slaves for 800 years so what are the media playing at? They are taking directions from George soros

Oh for fucks sake 🤦‍♂️

counting down the minutes to the next anti-Irish pro-immigrant story.

When I was younger I used to think the whole of Ireland was the most Beautiful place on Earth.

Walking off the ferry at Holyhead as an Irish person living in the UK in the early 80' s with the UK special branch looking at us all as terrorists ,having notes checked in shops , being called paddy a lot ,Irish jokes by co-workers and on MSM ,yeah...never experienced racism.

'White Irish people have never had to think about this' - except if they're catholic or protestant and which half of the border they come from...

Why don't Africans return to their shitholes? Because their papers are getting shredded regardless within a decade

No blacks, no Irish, no dogs. No, we’ve never had to think about it.

Oh piss off

Not wrong to be fair. But it’s pretty equalised hate.

More nonsense
