Chinese, Indian and Nepalese students alone brought in $2.4 billion for the state's 10 universities, which was close to the total income raised by domestic students fees, according to a 2019 audit.

Overseas students were generating more income for NSW universities than government grants for the first time last year, before the coronavirus pandemic cut international enrolments by more than 13 per cent.

The annual Auditor-General's report found universities were suffering from the consequences of an over-reliance on international student revenue. The Auditor-GeneralUniversities Australia this week revealed the country's universities could lose $16 billion between now and 2023, under new modelling which considered the sustained effect of COVID-19 on finances.

By contrast, revenue from domestic students grew just 2.2 per cent, by $92.3 million, and made up 19 per cent of total income. At the University of NSW, the University of Sydney and the University of Wollongong, overseas students brought in more money than domestic students.Government grants continued to decline as a portion of universities' total income, worth 31 per cent of revenue last year.

But they also needed to consider the impact of the pandemic on their governance arrangements, risks and regulatory requirements, the report said.

The universities offer excellent degrees and education..it isn’t money for nothing .

And now they're begging for Tax payers money.

Primarily we need to educate the Australian population. When this is done then shift the focus. Reset .

Nepalese n Indian students have to work as deliveroo n at 7/11 as they tend to be poor Students fr China/Malaysia/Indo dont have to work as parents r paying all cost

Lol.. Nepal at there ....

So now the Vice Chancellors will have to earn their million dollar salaries and save their universities from insolvency. That will be interesting.

And how many of these have to supplement their fees by working at the local pub, restaurant or Maccas? You won't see one cos they can't speak English. They are paid by their country to study, taking places of Aussie kids and raising the price of education out of the reach of most

It would be nice if their fees paid for indigenous and underprivileged peoples’ university education. One for one perhaps?

abcnews It's unconscionable that we provide the world's rich kids with education for financial gain while ignoring education to our own poor and the poor of our region. One of the richest countries in the world can afford to educate the poor.

And many grades were pencil-whipped.

I am confused. Overseas students claim they are paying fees and not attending campus as classes are online. Who's telling the truth

Not so long ago tertiary education in Australia was free for all local students and the system and standards were far greater than they are now. International students could still attend but they paid. No reason that system can’t be reintroduced.

You mean it’s 33% of the new construction package that will do nothing for the economy!

I thought universities were institutions of higher learning, not money making.

No manufacturing in Australia. Everything in Kmart and Big W are imported. You want renewable energy? Most of solar systems are imported. Where’s the foreign currency from?

Did they attend classes between shifts at 7/11?

Can we please stop talking abt how many $$$$ they brought in and focus a little on the fact that quite a worrying number of them had completely inadequate fluency in English to undertake courses at Australian universities? Technical language & vocabulary are higher order stuff.

What would happen to this figure if the federal Govt allowed universities to offer more places to domestic students? The current caps on domestic students distort the demand and supply for university places.

Minister of Education is in effect redundant DanTehanWannon

BS

Selling citizenship is not a business model.

Why do I find that disgusting? And where does the money go?
