Broadcaster Michael McLaren says while cutting politicians’ wages during the COVID-19 crisis by up to 20 per cent has support among the population, the “idea is pointless”. Although the private sector has suffered extensively throughout the crisis with job losses and pay cuts, the public sector remains “largely unaffected economically”. Mr McLaren argued a broad-brush 20 per cent pay cut to politicians and public servants will achieve “nothing more than symbolism”.

“We’ve got to get to task and address the costly, cumbersome duplication that’s existed between state and federal bureaucracies for far too long”. He noted how state governments are armed with “centurions of staff and paper pushers” in departments such as health, sport, and education, but it all exists again in Canberra. “Our federation has become one expensive dance of duplication where the Commonwealth always wants to lead but just ends stepping on the states’ toes”.

mclaren2gb I think politicians should have a 30% pay cut

mclaren2gb Look everyone, you're the unique being called 'the population'.

mclaren2gb Symbolism is important. Take religions for an example. Pure symbolism, little fact, but still essential for a proportion of the population. Politicians cutting their income by 20-50% would reassure people that they are not suffering alone.

mclaren2gb Who?
