Thirty-nine-year-old Nwachukwu Alagbu lost his wife, Nkiru, at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State, when doctors at the hospital allegedly refused to attend to her over fear that she had COVID-19. He tells RAPHAEL EDE how he helplessly watched his wife die
Initially, we thought that the symptoms she had were connected to typhoid fever. The doctor directed us to a clinic which he described as one of the best in the South-East. We went there and did all the tests which included CRS, electrocardiogram or ECG, and X-ray as he advised. So afterwards, an old medical doctor told us that he didn’t see anything wrong in the scan other than the cardiovascular disease – high blood pressure.
He said he could not go against the guidelines put in place by the management and that was final. There was a female doctor with him; I sought the attention of the female doctor. I said, ‘You are a mother, can you just attend to this woman, even if it’s only to see her in the car? She is lying in the car, helpless. She is still breathing but very weak; please come and attend to her.
What a pity! May God bless her soul & grant the Husband fortitude to bear the loss & cater for the children!
Its happening in lagos too. A relative was having a haemorrhage and was rejected by both Randle surulere and private hospitals becos they felt it was covid19. By the time he was taken to a centre it took hrs before he was attended to. He had passed on. People are dying😤

Doctors at UNTH Enugu refused to attend to Nwachukwu's wife over fear that she had Covid-19 and she eventually died in the car. Police officers are uneducated, untrained etc but these are doctors, educated and well trained. Nigerians over to you.

KoreOni Nigerian medical personnel are sick,Calos and wicked.I was in d hospital to see a sick family members, d way they give attention to patents is bad particularly d government owned hospitals. Those Doctors will like u to cross over to their own personal hospitals which is wrong.

Does it mean that the highest level of medical care in Nigeria which is the Teaching Hospitals do not have any protocol for screening and triaging patients at this time. Proper triaging at the entry points can help isolate cases accordingly without loosing many lives. Sad

It’s so unfortunate to learn that he lost his wife in the process. However, let’s assume the pandemic also contributed to the inefficiency in global health sector. The health practitioners are overburdened. The state government need to investigate the matter.
While commiserating with the bereaved, it is good to know that a story is never complete until you hear from both sides. Often times doctors are blamed for systemic failures in a hospital. Again, my condolences to the bereaved.

Nigerian doctors and nurses don't care, when you've emergency they ask useless questions and sometimes even abandoned some patient. I heard a midwifery telling a women in labour to shut up or she get slapped that was she there when she was doing it?
