When COVID-19 struck, this country did the opposite of all others – it didn’t shut down anything. Thousands have died but some still hail it as a success.

pandemic forced almost every country on the planet to bring a rapid end to many elements of everyday life, these kinds of once-normal activities have been largely impossible.

Despite that heavy loss, significantly higher than its Scandinavian neighbours, some are heralding the approach as something of a success – and a potential road map for the rest of the world. As the rest of Europe – and indeed the world – began locking down as coronavirus spread in February and March, Sweden’s health authorities decided on a vastly different approach.

“Even the most optimistic people seem to say that if we have a vaccine available in the next 18 months we are going to be very lucky,” he told the newspaper Anders Vahlne, a professor in clinical virology, is worried that Swedes don’t appreciate how infectious coronavirus is and that it can spread via asymptomatic people.“All data indicate that this virus spreads through the inhaling of aerosol particles, which stay infectious in the air for more than 16 hours.”

Picture: AFPPaul Franks, a professor of genetic epidemiology at Lund University, is one of those who believe Sweden could provide a guide for the rest of the world in the coming phases of the epidemic.

“Sweden, which is encouraging social distancing but has not fully locked down, could guide the world,” Prof Franks wrote in The Conversation. “Here, the authorities claim the country is rapidly approaching herd immunity .”Sweden’s mortality rate is in the 10 highest in the world and significantly greater than its neighbours Norway, Denmark and Finland.

Professor Marylouise McLaws, an epidemiologist with the Healthcare Infection and Infectious Diseases Control unit at UNSW, said the herd immunity approach came at a “high price”. “We believe we passed the peak of the transmission a week ago,” Dr Tegnell told the BBC. “It will definitely affect the reproduction rate and slow down the spread.”A study from New Zealand researchers this week examined the reproduction rates in several countries and compared it to their individual pandemic response plans.

It should be noted the three countries around Sweden have gone into lockdown, creating a buffer zone around that nation.

Did this rogue country get it right Bloody oath they have !! The only country to get it right . IMO.

If America had the same death rate per million as Sweden they'd have 82,000 deaths. Sweden failed.

Got to admire them, and their ability to face the virus head on.

Interesting to see who died .. the refugees perhaps so their deaths wouldn’t be something to worry about perhaps !

Sweden's Coronavirus Death Rate Nearly Twice That of U.S. as Trump Says Country 'Paying Heavily' For Not Having Lockdown

Note: applied to our larger population this is the equivalent of us having 4000 dead instead of less than 100. That, and until the question of immunity is settled, we don’t know for sure if exposing that many people to the virus has provided any benefit.
