As coronavirus spreads, keeping your kids at school could be the safest option — for now.

In a letter to parents, Geelong Grammar principal Rebecca Cody cited the school's unique position, hosting students from 16 countries as well as every Australian state and territory.

"If we were really serious about flattening the curve [of spread of the virus] we would have to think about closing schools," he said. "We know children get the virus, but are they creating a major part of the transmission chain, or are they having low viral loads and not passing the virus on?" he said.

What's unequivocal is that the best thing parents can do is ensure children wash their hands for 20 seconds with soap and water, and observe good hygiene. The other advice experts are urging us to consider is that it could actually be more dangerous to close schools than to keep them open. According to the CDC, that's because unsupervised children might engage in social mixing without adults keeping track of who is meeting who.

"If you take kids out of school, they then mix with adults and other kids in the park and that may do as much harm as good," Professor Booy said.

Why close schools for coronavirusaus, just get kids to practice the health advice. Kids-

Schools could be opened just for students of essential service staff Drs,nurses, ambos etc - teachers rostered to teach on rotating basis. this should free up room for stringent social distancing - rest taught via online

No, we shouldn't be sending our kids to school unless absolute necessary (e.g. doctors and nurses). Those that can keep their kids home should, and we shouldn't be penalised for it either. This was in an email I recieved from our school today QldGov closeschoolsnow

No stopclickbait

The answer is NO, we will see.

So later when kids are on school holidays & both parents are hospitalised due to virus will be so much better.... CloseTheSchools

Unless we are on total lockdown and have to stay in our homes like Italy then yes go to school, as being home isn't helping working parents

We have had school of the air since 1951 to educate kids in remote areas. With today's technology educating kids from home shouldn't be that hard

Propaganda from the ABC. The answer is NO.

Take any 'this is the advice' from the media with a grain of salt . This virus was only discovered in Nov , there are no real experts in it just yet , its 'best calculated guess' . Even the trains , trams are a germ fest .. no social distancing available on them

Russian roulette with our children. Mine are home as of today (schools will close anyway)... closures must be timed to the virus not the school holidays! Lockdownaustralia

The answer is no im not even gonna bother to read the article

Garbage! all about the economy and not humanity

If you are able to keep your child at home, I would.

Absolutely NO

This guy gets it.

The advice should be, if you are able to keep your children home in a supervised self isolation do so. If children are found out on the streets and violating the self isolation then parents should be fined as per the new legislation. It’s really not that difficult.

Discussing schools in isolation is a furphy... why not just shutdown everything for 2 weeks... simple, fast and effective. The economy will take a hit either way and why not do it early as so many medical experts recommend?

Unsurprisingly the answer is no. Given that there's no established advantage in terms of mitigating the spread of the virus.

Hey Can you advise if this advice applied to parents with chronic health conditions?

Corona cases by age in Korea and Italy

A big problem is that a large number of nurses have young children and they will have to stay home if schools close. No nurses no hospitals. I'm sure that is at the front of the 'keep schools open' plan.

I am sure I heard our medical expert say to close schools by the beginning of next week!! If you work in a school you know they are not cleaned properly and it is impossible to distance students!! I have not seen any supplies of sanitizer and we can’t wash hands constantly.

This is utter swill. Against all advice.

Thank you, this is actually very helpful.

Home school

I pulled my kid from high school last week. He is in no danger, I am in no danger, but we sure as shit don't want to spread it to old people who are. If you can't keep them home, send them to school. If you can keep them home, use your rights as a parent.

Why would the answer, which I've come up with myself, surprise me?

Kids will mix with hundreds/thousands of other kids at school. They might hang-out with 5-6 friends if they are off school. This is straight up BS from bureaucrats trying to save the economy instead of peoples lives.

The answer shouldn’t be surprising: NO
