Evangelist Adekunbi Akin-Taylor is the daughter of the late businessman, Chief Akin Taylor, and proprietress of Charlie-Marie Group of Schools. She tells ALEXANDER OKERE about growing up in a polygamous home, her career as a police officer in the United Kingdom and her relationship with her late father

Since your dad was a polygamist, how did you cope in a home with more than one wife and 15 siblings, especially with the tendency of disagreements ensuing? I never expected the level of reaction I got from reliving my life experiences. Some consider me bold for being so open. Many have learnt from it and people I don’t know phone me to congratulate, thank or ask me questions. I have had to send free copies to many schools and gift individuals. I also use the book while counselling women and girls, and give them copies. A man said he broke down and cried twice while reading my story.

It was really an uphill task but I’m happy to report that the dust has settled. Some had to go their separate ways but we still remain one blood. It is an uphill task that has to be done. So with all I get, I haven’t much to spare on myself. My children understand but want me to take better care of myself. The school project is a big one and I am handling it single-handedly. There are still loads of work to do in the school. There are quite a few regrets which I have had to live with.

He did not want me to marry the man I introduced to him. I went ahead and did what I wanted against his wish.I wouldn’t really know. But I can guess it was because he was a Muslim, though from a Christian family. He actually did not in words say why he disapproved. I am guessing like I did then: different cultures, different religions and being far from home. I now understand his anxiety. My dad didn’t speak to me while we were together. It was short-lived anyway. My mum had to stand by me.

Stop that. Everyone gets advance until death. Even at death, some people still go to graveyards to visit their loved ones.
