Flint's rate of special education students has grown steadily since the water crisis began –– 28% of students are in special education programs. The national average is about 13%. (hereandnow)

More than a dozen families in Flint, Michigan, are suing the public school system, arguing their children were exposed to brain-damaging levels of lead during the water crisis six years ago.

“What we're enforcing in this lawsuit in federal court is a federal entitlement statute that children are identified and that their disability-related needs are provided with accommodations and services so that they can access a quality education,” says Kristen Totten, an education attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union in Michigan.

Medical professionals have said there's no way to prove conclusively that lead has caused new disabilities in Flint. But it has been proven that children exposed to lead are at higher risk of neurological damage and developmental delays. “I've had a child that was potty trained and now all of a sudden she has a problem with incontinence,” Gutierrez says. “The worst types of behavioral issues are the ones where you can see that your child realizes that what they're doing is not normal.”

hereandnow if only there were a person w/, let's say $1B, who could help resolve this issue w/o experiencing any more financial strain than if i, for example, cut a penny in half and dropped one half into a sewer grate, causing me to come back in 30 minutes to retrieve the penny w/ a tool

hereandnow Did the children exhibit these behaviors BEFORE there was knowledge of the water contamination or after? I thought the contamination had been going on for some time so why the recent spike? Just asking for the sake of clarity, not being shady.

jon_quijano hereandnow This is what Democrats running your city looks like. Take note how they never had foresight to take care of anything. Those racist water pipes! How dare they.

hereandnow Why declare an emergency when you can do PR for the states Republicans

hereandnow It's not just flint

drmistercody hereandnow With how little politicians talk about this stuff you'd think it had been fixed. But nah, that would require them to care.

hereandnow onetoughnerd you poisoned children

hereandnow Ok WTF

hereandnow Strange...

hereandnow This is a crime against humanity. We should be ashamed there is no justice for crimes committed by political officials in America.

hereandnow Republicans get it done. Thank you dear leader realDonaldTrump. Bootstrap these nuts. At least they can dump coal ash again. Who needs water, or kids. GOP only drink bottled water

hereandnow Those children and their families should be pressing charges against the ones responsible

hereandnow Sickening that these people are left to be slowly poisoned

hereandnow I miss Obama :/

hereandnow Government run water distribution has done this. Still, people want more and larger government.

hereandnow MikeBloomberg if you want anyone to take you seriously as a candidate, why don't you pay to replace the pipes in flint? it would cost a fraction of what you've spent on ads trying to buy the election.

hereandnow 😭😭😭

hereandnow They still haven't fix Flint's water crisis? WTF ae they doing in D.C.?

hereandnow Affected by lead in the water?

hereandnow I wish the senate and congress and president would make this a priority.

hereandnow Pennywise Poundfoolish is the new American way. This is shameful. Richest country in the world but we can't give supply water that isn't filled with lead. And no one is held accountable.

hereandnow Does anyone know if Tessa Majors' family are celebrating black history month this year? Thanks.

hereandnow But they still don’t have water.........COME ON NPR DO YOUR JOB

hereandnow I love the implication, is this the View or NPR?

hereandnow HO-LY SHIT. That breaks my heart.

hereandnow The 'Flint-stoned kids', b/c there's something in the water.. - Flint's rate of special education students has grown steadily since water crisis began. 28% of students are in special education programs; national average is ~13% Class action lawsuit filed

hereandnow 3 of my grandkids were exposed to Flint water and all had high blood counts of lead. One (a preemie) with highest blood contamination is struggling in kindergarten. They were able to move out of city but the damage is there .

hereandnow Great job Democrats

hereandnow But, but, but realDonaldTrump says 'We have the cleanest Air and Water in the world' Who to believe!!!!!!! 🤬

hereandnow Lead poisoning. This should not be happing in the 21st century.

hereandnow This should not be happening in the richest country in the world. Shameful. Very shameful!
