England's schoolboys had worse exam results than girls for 30 years, league tables confirm

On current trends, the gap between rich and poor is set to be eclipsed by the gap between males and females, in terms of university entrance, within a decade, campaigners say.shows the gap between the percentage of girls' and boys' GCSE passes more than doubled between 1989 and 1999, from four to nine percentage points - a change often attributed to the introduction of GCSEs.

"On current trends, a girl born today will be 75% more likely to go to university than her male peers," she said. The data also shows the gender gap is apparent in the EBacc, which measures those pupils who achieve a grade 4 or above across the core academic subjects of English, maths, science, history or geography and a language.

There is now a clear need to tackle the underachievement of boys, according to the Men and Boys Coalition - a group of organisations, academics and individuals campaigning on male equality issues.Chief executive Dan Bell said:"For decades, this problem has existed but successive governments and the wider education establishment has buried its head in the sand and, in effect, ignored it.

"That attitude can no longer be tolerated if we are to live in a modern inclusive society that truly tackles inequality.

Positivteacha you seen this?

In my sister's school, the staff were only allowed to give one to one mentoring to migrant & BAME pupils. When one white working class boy asked sis to mentor him with English, the headteacher forbade it. The school favoured migrant kids over the local ones from the estate.

As someone who has worked for a variety of exams boards and professional bodies I can confirm that this is true in a variety of fields at various levels. Also trends relating to ethnic groups. Bottom line is hard graft, concentration and having active parental involvement.

We have a cultural issue that isnt being addressed

I do think (generalisation) based on personal experience and anecdotal ev: that the state system does not support the fact that boys mature differently to girls. Attention spans, different needs for physical outlets are just a couple of factors. Solution to this = ?.

Shocked I'm sure. The education was changed to benefit girls. Less exam based and more continuous assessment, leaving it to teacher judgement. Its a fact that on average, girls do less well in exams than boys. Restore 100% exam based results and we'll get some parity.

Well that's what happens when men and boys don't matter in society, and it's all centres around making sure women/girls get every opportunity. And BBC you are part of the constant attack on men. Sure the women and equalities minister will hel..... Oh wait

Because the boys spend all their time watching soccer on TV whereas women are more focused in rehearsal of their lessons at home . that's the point

So presumably before that girls were behind boys. Or perhaps that was neither mentioned nor a concern?

Time something was done about the education attainment gap? ... 👲

Patriarchy

This is appalling, i hope the BBC run as many article's about this as they would (rightfully) with girls...i'm not holding my breath, do they even own a stock image of a boy not being instructed by a girl anymore?

That’s sexist 🤔😂

There are always good and bad scores for boys and girls in school. What defines you is your projects after school! Rich and poor, normal, successful or snowflake. Success dont care about biological sex.

Gender is a side note and the difference is overblown. For the boys getting D's, their sisters aren't getting A's. Their sisters are getting a D+. So the main issue is family culture.

Patriarchy?

And we keep telling boys they have privelige and therefore girls should be given a helping hand in life.

Yes but we r better at football than girls

Fast forward two decades and the boys who are now men have the better paid roles. So much wasted female talent

We're better at football and drinking beer though!

Why do men rule the world like grown up schoolboys? ;-)

But girls are shit at football

Something to celebrate bbc?

the fact so many voted Tory in the last election proves not one of your kids are being educated properly they are being programmed to get used to self harm and the BBC are delivering the education . its like Savile was alive and running the whole show now

You know what! Not once have i been asked my grades. I make more in a day than my teachers in a week. Education is all about popping out little yes men for society! Do not conform if you want to grow. Be YOU and dont listen

Probably because of all the SNP texts. 🤔
