Recognizing the need to help children cope with the trauma brought about by Taal Volcano’s unrest, the Department of Education (DepEd) will be deploying its mental health personnel to conduct psychological first aid (PFA) to affected learners and teachers.

DepEd, in its Education Cluster Report as of January 21, said that among the steps to be undertaken is the deployment of its Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Serviced team to its Batangas Division for the conduct of the PFA.

The DepEd also noted that the number of schools that are being used as evacuation centers continue to increase. According to the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service of DepEd, all learners and personnel who experienced or were affected by natural disasters should undergo the PFA because it will help the agency assess the impact of the disaster. Conducting the PFA will also help the department to identify students and personnel who might need further professional help to cope with their traumatic experiences.
