MIRI: Floods in SK Benawa in Baram district in interior northern Sarawak have forced students and staff members to be evacuated on Tuesday (Jan 21) morning.

Floodwaters entered classrooms and the hostels, as well as the administrative blocks, with rising waters around a metre high.

Bomba personnel used boats to evacuate about a hundred or so students and teachers inside the school area that was inundated by floodwaters. The districts of Baram and Marudi saw numerous populated settlements inundated by more than a metre of floodwaters.Heavy rain over the past few days saw the rivers nearby overflowing at a swift pace, that even vehicles on the roads were trapped.Pictures sent by Sarawak Bomba saw cars and four-wheel drive vehicles and lorries trapped in floods about 1.5m high.
