BEAUFORT: The Sabah government hopes Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and whoever is appointed to take over the Education Ministry portfolio will look into the dire needs of East Malaysia's education infrastructure.

When asked about the likelihood of Dr Mahathir as acting education minister, state Education and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob said they welcomed the idea."For Sabah's side, we welcome him to the position and while he holds it, we hope he will take into account the aspirations of Sabah people as there are pressing demands for education in this state, in terms of infrastructure and needs of schools.

"We are worried with many wooden schools in Sabah, if we do not replace these buildings, many more will become dilapidated," said Dr Yusof. "There are schools in two sessions because of high number of students. But the facility remains the same for these overcrowded schools, forcing them to hold classes in store rooms or surau turned into classrooms.
