PETALING JAYA: Appoint a non-politician as a new Education Minister for a change if the government wants to be serious about major reforms, says Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia (PAGE).

Its chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim said the rakyat wanted to see a call-to-arms to mend our education system and standard if the government was serious about these major reforms.

Thanking Maszlee for his diligence and commitment to improving the country’s education system, National Union of the Teaching Profession secretary-general Harry Tan said he had done a lot especially in improving dilapidated schools, reducing corruption, providing free breakfast for students, and providing teachers with better facilities such as faster Internet speed.

He said he felt Maszlee was only making a lot of announcements but fundamentally failed to understand the education needs. “They need to plan at least three to five years ahead and then implement it, not announcing changes this year and implement it the same year, ” she said, adding that the ministry must stop coining “fancy phrases which mean nothing”.
