In 2017, Corbyn’s defeat was diagnosed as a victory. Now, the danger is that the excuses outrun the facts again writes David Miliband, the former Labour Foreign Secretary

At three successive elections in the last decade, Labour has failed to address the reasons for its defeat. The consequence is simple. We lose again. The electorate send us back to the classroom. This time, a similar failure, a further relapse into denial, and the result could be fatal for the party and the communities we are supposed to serve.

DMiliband For the love of God can anyone not see, the only way Labour will get people to trust them again and back them if they miraculously get David Miliband to become Labour leader the tories would be dead and buried

You should have been leader. Then no Brexit, no Tories and some.

nietzschean10 Look what's just crawled out of the woodwork.

Is this the same guy that spat his dummy out, gave two fingers to his constituents and fled across the pond to a lucrative “charidee” job? Can’t see Jeremy doing that

Er... No. We need to deal with the lies in politics DavidMilliband

DMiliband Labour went down the drain when they chose Ed instead of DMiliband ..

DMiliband That meeting shouldn’t take long. A leader who couldn’t/wouldn’t lead, a nasty culture within the party ie momentum activist. New Leader needs to be more Blair like and a professional PR machine otherwise you can kiss goodbye the next election already.

Never have I seen , a left wing psychotic mob destroy a decent political party in all my life. R.I P Labour Party m

Too late... Labour are back in year zero!

DMiliband Still patiently waiting for you to return to frontline politics here in the UK David. 🤞

DMiliband Yes I definitely want lectures on how not to repel voters from David Miliband. If I want a hand with extraordinary rendition and enabling torture, maybe I'll give him a call.

Labour, prepare to repel traitors..

The whole Labour ethos is repellent. Rest In Pieces.

DMiliband Therefore This General Election 2019, Welcome to the 'DARK SIDE OF THE MOON' The Labour Party as officially Comfortably Numb. YO! Best to you.

DMiliband Perhaps had you not caved when the cherry of leader ship was denied you, and fought for working class ideals, then a moderate, centrist Candidate like yourself would have a chance. It's easy to throw stones when you're impotently targeting from the sidelines

Why don't you make a come back FFS

An incisive piece by DMiliband on Labour's predicament & need to choose their leader wisely if they're ever to return from the political wilderness. There's a question no-one's addressing: if Labour choose badly, what do rational moderates in Labour do?

Rubbish.

DMiliband Not being funny David but you should just stick to what you're up to now because you haven't done much but poke at the Labour movement from a distance for years.

It’s about time he came back and fought an election. We need him.

Wee Dave and his cronies are not the answer tho, that time has passed

DMiliband Pretty damn spot on

Such crap from Milliband. Suggest he sticks to raking in loads charity cash in US and leaves UK to people who actually live here.

Must but won't!

First thing to do.. Jeremy Corbyn out!

DMiliband Remember Milliband .Corbyn defended your dad on tv against similar lies you leech ..charity means charity .free gratis not nearly £300.000 a year in wages 💩

DMiliband Spot on David RichardBurgon - Richard another read for you once Jon L has given you Farley’s rusks with your milk and written your Santa letter for you

DMiliband not unless YOU ( DM) come back and rescue the LP

DMiliband In 1992 11.6m voted for a labour candidate In 1997 13.5m In 2001 10.7m In 2005 9.5m In 2010 8.6m In 2015 9.3m In 2017 12.9 In 2019 10.3 Don’t know how anyone can look at those verifiable numbers and conclude 2019 was uniquely repulsive.

DMiliband Please please get yourself in a position to stand for leadership David. The UK needs you. Please stand.

The forgotten lesson was: Oppositions don’t win elections – Governments lose them. But Tory lies on the economy and Brexit needed exposing: £800 billion debt, worse productivity growth of major economies, Johnson breaking his referendum promises. See -

There is no one credible to lead the Labour Party. That was the problem, plus they thought they could attract voters with policy's that everyone else could see were unachievable.

DMiliband David...PLEASE COME BACK AND STAND FORLEADERSHIP, ITS WITHIN THE RULES OF PARLIAMENT. PLEASE!!!

Not repelled by the Tories at all.... 🙄every day since they got in I feel physically sick. 🤮

Shut up David!

DMiliband Nah Labout didnt, but the right wing media did a damn good job of brainwashing voters, and all of the Blairites helped to. Things could have been so different if instead of demonising this kind caring man you had helped him. JC is a great man Tarnished because he wants peace.

Labour did not repel voters nor did their manifesto... Jeremy Corbyn and Dianne Abbot repelled voters......

So when are coming back ffs?

Just don't go back to pander to the xenophobic voters.

I understand why people voted Tory in 2015 I voted for jeremycorbyn as UKLabour leader because ALL the other candidates wanted to support Osborne cuts;they’d been scared into submission. Labour became Tory lite. Now Corbyn Labour went all out left so people voted Tory + Brexit

Putting Labour's entire from bench on the back bench..and all the other haters...until deselection day would be a good start

Compromise is not a crime and David Milliband is right . The less you have the less able you are to take a risk . The Labour leadership is too privileged to see this and if it wants to lead it shouldn’t need to be told this

Cease being a vanguard party. The proletariat rump now owns houses and lives in Essex and Kent. Elect a leader who, unlike Corbyn, can appeal to the crucial middle 15% of the electorate required to form majority government or don’t bother😉

The party is fine. It's leadership and leadership cronies that have to go

Maybe Labour should stop jailing innocent people and blocking the will of the people. Just a thought.

Yep

Someone should tell him that Labour is already at the cemetery gate, Boris is holding it wide open for them.

The Labour party is supposed to represent 'the working man' but it insists that 'the working man' is either unemployed or living in poverty. The modern working man isn't doing too badly & Labour need to reflect that thinking in their policies if they are to fairly represent them.

UKLabour already has one foot in the grave and has since everyone was brainwashed in to believing that Blair years where a mistake and we should all run like lemmings in electing an back-bencher without experience as a LabourParty leader

Where the fuck did this joker crawl out from?

And yet another take on the same story. Can't wait for Su Pollard's column on it.

Labour repelled voters? Indeed it did. Remember Mandelson's boast (Guardian 21.02.2017 'I try to undermine Corbyn 'every single day''). Their faux anger makes me sick. This is exactly the result they were working for.

Frances_Coppola I am not a Labour supporter but I am a democrat. The Labour Party owes it to the people to put forward a credible alternative set of policies and team. A strong government needs a strong opposition.

Your brothers fault.

This from the man who lost a leadership contest, stopped being an MP, left his country to earn a shed load of money, who now has the answers to sort out the situation? Do us a favour, shove yer patriotism.

Exactly the same happened when Thatcher came to power - Labour self imploded. Why was the lesson not learned then?

Bots helped in influencing brexit now they’re moving over to help keep labour is disarray & divided. Be suspicious of accts w/ the usual bot traits but also new accts from Nov/Dec 2019. Bots want corbyn 2.0 bc they know labour don’t stand a chance w/ that.

A dream JC resigns seat and heads off to the allotment with some 6th form political students DM sits in Islington and gets brexit Johnson to account actions.

Same David again!

You ran away

Well then split up both big parties & do us all a favour The bulk of the electorate are completely ignored & being told all the time that must be far Left or ERG Right What a crock that is We need more choice to properly re-engage the electorate with politicians working for us

Taking lessons from the mob that ran Labour in to the ground

Says the man who earns nearly a million quid each year working for a charity.

Wow this is a fucking terrible article

shut up nerd

The fixes are simple; focus more on the new/young voters and replace the current leadership with a more in touch young leader. Theme; YOUNG. For the Labour Party to progress, it’s time for it to evolve from old man politics

Imagine a choice between David 'Interesting' Miliband and Rebecca 'Slightly Less Interesting' Long-Bailey. Then run like hell.

Watch the abuse. Something on the lines of ‘Blairite scum’ etc. 😒

It’s not rocket science The electorate have common sense Listen to them

Yeh let’s make Lammy our leader, that I’ll work. 🤦‍♂️

Still carrying on with the far left corbyn nonsense they not learned anything lol

Do people with very high morals ever take risks?

Is it that Labour repelled voters or that voters were entranced by talk of “kick the foreigners out”? Face it: Britain, and England in particular, is filled with racists. This is the problem you need to solve.

Yes, that's right and you helped massively to that. Thanks

Says the guy from the political graveyard.

Labour Diane Abbot has to go.

Risk it 😂
