Its students might be in the bottom quartile of disadvantage but this Sydney school's strategy of focusing on literacy in the early years of high school is paying off for its graduates.

For the first three years of secondary school, Canley Vale High's timetable includes two periods a week of literacy.

Canley Vale High School's high achievers: Kenny Tang, Gemma Truong, Quang Hoang Dang Phan, Anna Ha, Ying Jin, Emily Khou and Bryan Eng.It's working. When disadvantage is factored into HSC results, Canley Vale is among the state's highest-achieving schools, followed by Glen Innes High School and Hastings Secondary College.

But it does not just excel in the HSC. Canley Vale is also the top public school in the state when it comes to growing students' capacity between year 7 and 9, based on the NSW Department of Education's so-called value add analysis of NAPLAN results."The HSC is largely a written exam for most subjects," he said. "The ability to use the English language is essential; there's not many jobs you can do that you can get by with poor literacy skills.

As only band 6 data is released, it also does not acknowledge the achievements of schools such as Condell Park High. Eighty per cent of students there are either at or below minimum standard when they begin year seven, but this year's graduates achieved 12 band 6 and 47 band 5 results.

Free hot lunches, trips to the pool sees remote school win attendance battleSee how this remote WA school is keeping children in class for longer with hot lunches and free entry to the local pool. 'A lot of students were going hungry.' I'm pretty sure that is child neglect, perhaps schools in that region should operate more like boarding schools where all of the child's needs are catered for even though they are still within their communities & can access their families. Dangerous commentary from someone that sits behind his screen all day and has no engagement with the outside world. I wonder if people in regional and remote communities would like him providing the answers to their social and cultural issues? I vote NO. While there is structural work needed to address attendance and welfare in some remote areas this seems an excellent initiative and shows the value of direct, informed and relevant nurture of children at risk. Great that it supports the home environment rather than replacing it.
