The debate over surveillance and privacy is as old as America itself, argues Lawrence Cappello OpenFuture

ONE OF the toughest questions of modern life is where to draw the bounds of privacy—and privacy law. Digital technologies make a virtue of sharing. At the same time, the ability of governments and companies to keep people’s activities under surveillance has never been greater. Slick artificial-intelligence algorithms depend on data, and creeping authoritarianism around the world means that the collection of vast quantities of data may be a recipe for disaster.

But surveillance can also be used to serve sinister ends. And precisely because surveillance is a powerful tool of social control, societies tend to impose limits on the ability of authorities to place individuals under surveillance against their will or without their knowledge. Among the cornerstones of liberal democratic practice is the necessary curtailment of surveillance claims made by monarchs and municipal authorities.

Unconstrained surveillance by law enforcement also can abet starkly antidemocratic tendencies. It prevents private social and political groups from expressing themselves, to the detriment of a pluralistic society. The establishment of powerful surveillance apparatus is a hallmark of totalitarian regimes, which require complete fealty.

Rather quickly, the old legal and social controls were outstripped. As historian Sara Igo notes, it was there, in the postwar period, where the threat to privacy “came not from one particular direction but from every corner of American society,” including “the government and the military, corporations and workplaces, universities and hospitals, media and marketers.”

Great read indeed. The demand for true data ownership and protection continues to grow. TrustUnion's TrustSearch_ is giving users control over their data. Users can request removal of their data as well as decide what info to make private/public. User data isn't shared or sold.

I agree!

The making of law and education on IT didn't catch up the development of technology

The Economist has not covered Dr Craig Wright. Has not published a comprehensive article about BSV, has not therefore understood bitcoin, privacy, owning your own data by default or the mechanics of the fourth industrial revolution. Study Bitcoin SV and Dr Craig Wright.

Fascinating article Thank U still the most informed read in the world Just one little point Mr.Dickens While you’re writing about GhostOfChristmasFuture maybe U should think about a slot for the GhostOfChristmasPresent? Can u spot the little contradiction?

How does this bump up against law enforcement

Baby

I think Locke would argue that privacy is a matter of self preservation, which makes it fall under not just a human right, but obligation

The picture is from an amazing under rated movie although I didn’t see the movie mentioned In the article... The Lives of Others (German: Das Leben der Anderen)

Very true

Yes, make it a **global** human right!

The law isn't the issue but procedural compliance & integrity of the process. If FISA court (& the high-profile resignation of a FISA court judge protesting law enforcement's circumvention of warrant procedures) couldn't stop the surveillance state, how can we improve compliance?

make sure ur priority. what u want from ur government , privacy from Gov or Seurity against terrorist ? be sure these PR_Journalisam don't manipulate ur priorities . these have own vested interest.

Dream on. The best way to ensure privacy and security is to unplug. And this is nothing new. During the Cold War we knew how to do it., then we got sloppy.

Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it literally is a human right.

Güzel filmdi

This is a great movie as well, BTW

PetSafe Treat

And it’s being traded for convenience at an escalating, alarming rate.

Some forms of security we use on a regular already compromise privacy CCTV for 1 example. Data-mining to stop a terrorist plot works why worry there. Privacy in a modern world is an unknown concept. There has to be a balance but also a sacrifice

'facts of life' ... include; -drinking clean water -eating healthy food -breathing fresh air -gravity ... Surveillance - what happens when APATHY is the norm?
