Comment: As HSC students await their results, it's worth remembering that now is not forever when choosing study and career paths, writes Dr Patrick Garcia

As an estimated 75,000 HSC students await the release of their exam results on Tuesday, most who intend to go to university have already turned their attention to selecting the right course amid societal pressures to choose a lifelong career straight out of school.

People entering the workforce have to determine what value they place on pay, professional development and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Some individuals find jobs that tick all the boxes, but compromises are usually made as society's values and priorities change over time. People naturally gravitate towards careers they find interesting. We determine what is interesting based on what we think we are good at. And what we are good at is determined by our achievements and accomplishments.

Today there is a need for employees to be proactive and adaptable. That includes being comfortable and ready to face possible career challenges and transitions. The good news is, and contrary to what most people think, proactivity and adaptability can be learned and strengthened.
